The National Centre for Energy Research and Development, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is a special library on Renewable and Alternative Energy Sources, established in 1982 alongside the parent organization. Research is the lifeblood of innovation and development in every field of human endeavor. Research will be ineffective if there is inadequate collection, storage and retrieval of research materials in any establishment. The stock of information resources in the library constitutes the bedrock of research. The Library, through its stock and information services, supports research activities of their parent institutions. The aim and objective of the Library unit of the centre is to provide information resources to meet the information needs of the research staff and other library users, especially in the present digital library environment. The major objective of the Library unit is to support research activities through the provision of current and quality information resources in the area of renewable and alternative energy technologies.

General Aim NCERD Library

National Center for Energy Research and Development, University of Nigeria, Nsukka is a special library on Renewable and Alternative Energy Sources, established in 1982 alongside the organization. The library aims at supporting and meeting the information needs of the research staff in the parent institution as well as the general public. Our collections, which are wide and varied, reflect this aim.

  • NCERD Digital Library Now Opened

The NCERD Digital Library is now open to offer digital library services to our staff and other researchers across the globe. Our e-books and e-journals can be accessed across the globe without any physical boundary.

  • NCERD Online Public Access Catalogue (WebOPAC)

The NCERD Web OPAC is an Online Public Access Catalogue whichis an online version of our library catalogue that allows users to search, browse, and access information about our library’s collection via the Internet. It provides an interactive interface for library users to navigate the library using keywords, authors, titles, or subject. Our web OPAC is accessible from anywhere, anytime, without any physical boundary via a web browser, making it convenient for users

Library Resources and Services

The NCERD library has in stock books, journals, E-books and E-journals, bibliographies, conference/workshop proceedings, serials, government as well as University of Nigeria publications. The library also offers reprographic services such as photocopy, binding, printing and lamination services

READING FACILITIES.

Seating space is provided for library users with the supply of solar electricity. It, however, accommodates all the staff of the Energy Centre as well as other users within and outside the university community. Other facilities like laptops, reading carrels, newspaper racks and journal display racks, etc., are in place.

The Library Users

The library accommodates all our users who are made up of staff of the Energy Research Centre, undergraduates and postgraduate of the University of Nigeria, and other universities, especially those from the Department of Physics and Faculty of Engineering. However, despite their research areas, the library is open to the interested public.

Library Registration

To benefit from all the library facilities, resources, and services, proper registration is one of the basic requirements for every user.

SERVICES

NCERD library is a special library on Renewable and Alternative Energy Source that is established to serve the information needs of the general staff of the centre especially the research staff as well as other library users outside the establishment. The library offers unrestricted access to its collections. The library is making every effort to establish her digital library where readers with personal smartphone technologies—iPhones, tablets, iPod, land aptops, can access the library database without any physical boundary.

Information Services

Dissemination of information resources to all the centers’ staff and the global community in the area of renewable and alternative energy technologies.

Reference Services

Our reference materials include Encyclopedias, Directories, dictionaries, Yearbooks, Thesaurus, Prospectuses, University Calendars, World Population Datasheets, Research Projects Works (Theses/Dissertations), etc. also publications of Energy Commission of Nigeria such as:

  • National Energy Policy
  • National Energy Data bank
  • Small hydro-power
  • Renewable Energy Masterplan

Lending Services

The library lending services of the physical materials will be limited to the NCERD Research Center’s staff.

Reprographic Services

The library offers photocopying, printing, binding, and laminating services to users.

Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI):

The library offers the specialized type of service targeted to individuals or group of individuals by channeling current information from various sources to those selected users within the organization who are really in need of such information.

Current Awareness Service (CAS):

The library makes available the most recently acquired information resources to the users. It entails making current information available to users at the point when it is mostly required or needed.

Bibliographic Services

We have collections of publisher’s catalogues and can trace a particular title or produce a booklist on a specific subject. Also, an annotated bibliography on Crop Science is available.

Support to Libraries at University of Nigeria

The Energy Research Centre Library offers assistance to the other departmental libraries of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. This is done through the provision of information and practical guidance during students’ Project Research works or Industrial Training.

CAPACITY BUILDING TARGETS

Human capacity building improves the organization’s performance and enhances its ability to function and continue to stay relevant within a rapidly changing environment. Our capacity building typically involves training and re-training of library/ICT staff that is done periodically through seminars, workshops, and conferences to enable the library/ICT staff acquire the current skills especially in the area of e-library development and general information management skills. The human capacity building/training will include in-house training and short courses within and outside the country. Staff are encouraged to embark on Continuing Development Programmes to enable them further their studies. Hence, staff that have not obtained their Masters and Doctoral Degrees are being encouraged to do so. Also, in-house training is being conducted periodically to keep the staff abreast with the current developments in the field.
